"Mom, this penny was built in 1971."
"Oh yeah? Well now it's 2009. So can you figure out how old it is?"
"Um...."
"Count up by 10s from 71."
(Ben's eyes look up to ceiling while calculating)
"38!"
"That's right!"
"And Dad's older than that, and he's not dead, so it'll be a long time before this penny dies."
"Let's hope."

It does seem natural to think of "things" as aging, but so many of them could be timeless--in human terms--if they were taken care of.
